The Santa Maria Police and Fire Departments will soon be taking applications. A city sales tax increase is helping fund 14 new positions with the police department as well as major increases in staffing and equipment for the fire department. Voters approved measure U back in 2012. Under the measure 16 million of the projected 18 million dollars collected annually is to be spent on public safety.
