More than 40,000 friends and family attended Cal Poly’s 78th annual spring commencement celebration Saturday. More than 5100 students were eligible to graduate this year. The ceremony started with a moment of silence for 22-year-old senior Nicole Scalone who died in a head-on crash that also claimed the life of 43-year-old Anthony Au. The more than 40,000 visitors to Cal Poly included the family of Carson Starkey, who died of alcohol poisoning more than 10-years-ago. They accepted his Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering.
