The Central Coast joined communities across the country Saturday to celebrate Juneteenth for the first time as a federal holiday. Juneteenth celebrations were held across San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara Counties. Last week, Congress and President Joe Biden created a federal holiday to observe the historic day in 1865, when slaves in Texas were finally declared free more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
