A couple of Cal Poly professors have developed a saliva test to detect COVID-19. Necessity being the mother of invention, Cal Poly had to figure out how to test between 3 and 5,000 students daily. Professor Nathanial Martinez and his brother Andres Martinez came up with a low-cost, paper-based Polystick. The Polystick turned out to be so successful, it will soon be commercialized by a Santa Maria-based company, Hardy Diagnostics. Officials say it could be about a year before the Polystick is available to the public.
