A man accused of gunning down an 11-year-old boy and his uncle 21 years ago has been scheduled to appear in court. In July 2001 Stephen Deflaun was accused of shooting the boy and his uncle to death following an argument over a campsite at Morro Strand State Beach. Authorities also say he shot at a park ranger. According to the Tribune, the 63-year-old was deemed incompetent to stand trial and remanded to the Atascadero State Hospital. In December last year, a judge ruled Deflaun was competent to stand trial and a preliminary hearing was scheduled for May 23rd.
