The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of a female inmate. According to the sheriff’s office press release, 35-year-old Kristina Chermak was arrested in March for burglary. She waiting to be taken to the Department of State Hospitals for restoration of mental competency to stand trial. At 10:04 Friday night, deputies checked her cell and noted no issues. By 10:27 she was found unresponsive by a facility nurse. An agency outside the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office is conducting the investigation.
