Santa Maria Police and the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s office are investigating a weekend officer-involved shooting that left one man dead. It happened late Sunday night on the 1000 block of West Morrison. Officers made contact with an armed suspect, who refused verbal commands and threatened the officers. FBI-trained crisis negotiators were brought to the scene to try and de-escalate the situation. The armed suspect then tried to break into an occupied apartment and shots were fired. The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s office is conducting an independent investigation.
