A group of Santa Maria junior high school students spent the day at the beach yesterday. The eighth-grade AVID class from Arellanes Junior High School had planned a community service project to help clean up a local beach following a busy Memorial Day Weekend. According to KSBY, AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. The program helps students prepare for secondary education and maybe find a future career path.
