Developers in Santa Maria want to build more than 600 affordable and market-value homes. Those plans are still in the infant stages. Several hurdles still need to be cleared. The biggest is the rezoning of a 20-acre plot off Waller Lane and Santa Maria Way. Another is a proposed project on Union Valley Parkway. While the Santa Barbara Planning Commission has approved the projects, it did not approve rezoning the properties. They left that decision up to the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors. A vote could come in a few weeks.
