Federal Court Denies Environmental Group’s Petition

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit has denied a petition by a coalition of environmental groups hoping to close the Diablo Canyon power plant. After PG&E missed a federal deadline to file a license extension application, The Nuclear Regulatory Commission granted PG&E an extension. San Luis Obispo Mothers for Peace, Friends of the Earth, and the Environmental Working Group filed a lawsuit claiming the NRC was not within its rights to grant the extension. Governor Gavin Newsom and other state leaders have argued Diablo is crucial to California’s energy supply, at least until 2030.
