A 26-year-old woman taking part in a 2,800-mile rowing race between California and Hawaii needed to be rescued this week. She was about 72 miles southwest of Morro Bay on Wednesday when a medical emergency was declared to the U,S, Coast Guard. A Jayhawk helicopter plucked her from the rowboat Julie and took her to a medical team waiting at the San Luis Obispo Airport. She was reported to be in stable condition. Two other crewmembers were towed back to Morro Bay yesterday.
