Good news for California renters.
Landlords will no longer be able to charge exorbitant security deposits to potential renters. Assembly Bill AB-12 goes into effect today. It prevents California landlords from charging two times and (in some cases three times) the monthly rent as a security deposit. Something some renters say is a barrier to housing accessibility. Landlords with fewer than four units are exempt from the new law.
