Prior to the Fourth of July holiday, the Santa Maria Police and Fire Departments issued warnings to area residents about the use of illegal fireworks. 50 citations were given to people using fireworks considered unsafe. Those citations carry a possible 1,000-dollar fine. Animal safety and drone observation warnings were also issued and all citations will be reviewed by city officials.
