Residents living around the Santa Maria Airport may have noticed an increase in air traffic. Cal Fire aircraft have been using the airport to refuel planes used to battle the Lake Fire. Having an airport so close to an active wildfire can get planes refueled and loaded with fire retardant, and back into the fight in minutes. Smoke from the Lake Fire reduced visibility at the airport, but airport officials say they are ready to support any aircraft once visibility improves.
