Atascadero High School officials notified parents Friday that a student had been diagnosed with pertussis, or whooping cough. A person with whooping cough can present common cold symptoms that eventually develop severe coughing fits. School officials say students with pertussis can return to school following a 5-day cycle of antibiotics.
