According to a report by the San Luis Obispo Police Department, the city saw a spike in violent crime in 2022. The report points out that the city experienced an overall increase of 18 percent in violent crimes. The number of rapes increased by 48 percent. Police also saw a 21 percent increase in robberies and aggravated assaults were up 15 percent between 2021 and 2022. Officers responded to more than 110,000 calls for service while dealing with a severe staffing shortage.
